Overview
Background
NoteGen AI is a smart note-taking application designed to elevate the learning experience for students and lifelong learners. The project originated from a simple observation — while digital tools for note-taking have become widespread, many still struggle to organize, review, and retain information effectively.
Built as part of the EXE201 Capstone Project at FPT University, our goal was to explore how AI could empower the learning process — helping users capture ideas intuitively, generate insights automatically, and turn scattered notes into meaningful knowledge systems.

Problem statement
Students and self-learners often face the same challenges when managing notes:
Their notes are fragmented across multiple apps or formats.
Reviewing and summarizing information takes excessive time.
There’s a lack of connection between ideas, leading to passive learning.
Despite the rise of digital note-taking tools, most fail to assist in active learning — the process of transforming raw content into structured understanding. NoteGen AI was created to solve this gap by combining thoughtful design with AI assistance.

Our Process for NoteGen AI
We adopted a human-centered and AI-driven approach, focusing on how learners interact with their notes across different stages — from capturing to reviewing and applying knowledge. Through user interviews, prototype testing, and iterative design, we identified opportunities to make the learning flow more intuitive and meaningful.
Key Actions Taken
1. Insight Discovery:
We conducted interviews with university students and young professionals to understand their study habits and the role of note-taking in daily learning. Insights revealed a strong need for tools that can “think with the learner,” not just store text.
2. Experience Mapping:
By mapping the full learning journey, we pinpointed key friction points — such as the difficulty in reviewing long notes or recalling key terms during exam preparation.
3. Smart Note Interface:
We redesigned the interface around simplicity and cognitive focus — clean layouts, subtle typography hierarchy, and contextual AI prompts that help users generate summaries or keywords instantly.
4. AI-Powered Review System:
An adaptive AI system was integrated to transform existing notes into keyword sets, flashcards, and quick-review questions — turning passive reading into active recall practice.
5. Seamless Export & Accessibility:
Users can export AI-generated review materials into DOC files for offline learning or printing, ensuring flexibility beyond the digital environment.
Key Features Introduced
AI-assisted note summarization and keyword generation
Flashcard and quiz creation for active recall
Clean, distraction-free interface for focused learning
DOC export for offline study sessions
Adaptive review recommendations powered by user data

Results and Impact
Achieved an average score of 9.5/10, ranking in the top 20% of the university’s interdisciplinary capstone projects.
Selected for the final pitching round, where the idea was presented to industry experts and faculty as a model of design–AI integration in education.
Garnered highly positive feedback for its clean interface, meaningful UX flow, and AI-assisted learning experience.
NoteGen AI reshaped the perception of note-taking — from a passive activity into an active learning process. The project demonstrated how design thinking and artificial intelligence can come together to make studying smarter, lighter, and more human-centered.
